Universal Destinations & Experiences is expanding its longstanding partnership with After-School All-Stars, a national nonprofit that provides free after-school and summer programs to students in underserved communities. Universal has supported the launch of new Innovators Labs in both Los Angeles and Orlando.
The labs are designed to help students develop innovation skills, confidence, and career awareness through project-based learning. The program encourages students to develop innovative solutions for everyday challenges, with recent projects ranging from self-watering herb gardens to mobility canes with lights and phone holders.
"Many students don't have access to this level of experiential learning," says Ana Munoz, curriculum administrator of youth programs at Universal Orlando Resort. "Opportunities like this help them connect academics to real-world careers."
More than 500 students from both coasts joined a pilot program this summer, tackling challenges across design, technology, sustainability, accessibility and operations. Volunteers from Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood helped launch the pilot in their local communities.
Now, as the program officially launches, over 3,000 After-School All-Stars students on both coasts will experience the Innovators Lab this school year.

"The energy in the room was incredible. Students opened up about the obstacles they'd overcome in their projects, and in turn, our Universal Studios Hollywood volunteers shared their own career journeys, from attractions leadership to entertainment production," says Donny Faalilu, senior vice president of leadership & community outreach at After-School All-Stars in Los Angeles. "That kind of exchange builds confidence and expands what our students believe is possible for their futures."

Universal leaders helped develop the curriculum and ensured it reflects real-world challenges within themed entertainment. Team member volunteers also served as project coaches, career panelists and showcase judges.
Together, Universal Destinations & Experiences and After-School All-Stars are helping students develop new skills and connect their passions to future opportunities.
